TVRs at Watkins Glen -- Zippo Vintage Grand Pix Weekend

A total of 8 TVRs were present for the Zippo Vintage Grand Prix weekend in September at Watkins Glen, NY. Activities got underway on Friday afternoon in the village of Watkins Glen with a car show and the streets lined with historic racecars including approximately 15 vintage Bugattis. Also spotted in the car show was Phill Warren's 1986 280i. That evening, they recreated the original 1948 Grand Prix which was run through the streets of Watkins Glen. Thousands of spectators lined the streets as vintage racecars of all types came down the hill into the village and up the main thoroughfare to the delight of all. There were vintage MGs, Lotuses, Alfas, Bugattis, Ford GTs, Cobras, Porsches, Lolas, Mustangs, and the list goes on. The sights and sounds of these cars going through the streets was wonderful.

On Saturday, we gathered at Watkins Glen International Raceway and participated in the annual car show. On the showfield, we had a Vixen S2 of David and Ann Cooke, 2500Ms of Rick Hall, Mike Wells, Kenny Rollins, Cliff Nysola, Fred Koeand the 280i of Marshall Moore. Also present were Phill Warren and Richard Brown, both with their 1986 S2 280is. There were other TVR owners there but without their cars. In addition to the TVRs, TVRCCNA Events Chairman Tony Hess was present with his beautiful Ford GT-40 replica which drew a crowd all day. About midday, participants in the car show were given some on-track time. Because of the sheer number of cars, action on the track started off slow, but gradually progressed and by the third lap, we were getting some fairly decent speed around the course. After our on-track time, we continued to enjoy the sights and sounds of Watkins Glen but with some intermittent rain showers. Later in the afternoon, the skies looked more threatening so we headed back to the hotel. However, before we could exit the track, the bottom dropped out of the sky and the rains fell and got heavier as we drove. One poor soul in a Triumph TR3 ahead of me didn't have his top up and was getting soaked. As we proceeded along the road to the hotel, the rains got more intense, we drove through standing water, and, as convertibles are prone to do, the top on my 280i leaked and I got rather wet. It was reminiscent of 'Wetwork 2005'. By the time we were about 3/4ths the way back to the hotel, we could barely see where we were going and finally we came out of it, the rain stopped, and we got some relief. That evening, several of us got together for a relaxing dinner before calling it a night.

On Sunday, we headed back out to the track hoping to get in some good viewing of the racing action. We got to see a couple of early races before the rains started up again. Soon, the fog moved in and our vision was cut to no more than about 50 feet in places. In fact, we were about 50 yards from the track and could hear cars going around but couldn't see a thing. That was a sign that it was time to hit the road for the drive home. This vintage event held each fall is an excellent venue and will be a regular TVRCCNA Northeast Region event. The activities in the village on Friday night are worth the visit, not to mention all the activities at the track the rest of the weekend. So I hope many of you will put this event on your schedule for 2008 and join us there.

Newport Concours Car and Boat Show
Newport, Rhode Island

Harbour Court, the lavish home of the New York Yacht Club, located on the harbor in Newport, Rhode Island, was the setting for the annual Newport Concours Car and Boat Show on Saturday, October 13, 2007. Beautiful weather blessed the participants as a wide array of stunning cars from the turn-of-the-century Roberts Electric up to a brand new Sypyker or a Bentley Continental GT Coupe or Convertible graced the sweeping expanse of lawn in front of the beautiful mansion originally built for Mr. Brown, founder of Brown University.
TVRCCNA Member Paul Eddy was chairman of this year's event which accounted for the strong TVR showing on the lawn. A total of 9 TVRs were on hand ranging from an 1800S through a 280i.

The TVRs on hand included the 1800S of Marc Blum, the 2500M of Steve Barao, the V8 Vixen, V8 3000S and Vixen S2 of Paul Eddy, the 3000S of Tom Flynn, the Tuscan LWB V8 of Jorgen Mortensen, the 2500 of Jim O'Malley, and the 280i of Marshall Moore.

There was also a nice assemblage of Ferraris on hand as well as a plethora of other marques including such names as Marcos, Mercedes-Benz, Rolls-Royce, Duesenberg, Bugatti, Maserati, Cunningham, Spyker, Morgan, Alfa Romeo, Cord, and much, much more.

In addition to the cars, were a series of splendid boats along the dock in front of the mansion and a few race cars along the grassy area bordering the harbor.

An elegant lunch inside Harbour Court was provided for those who purchased tickets, and the day was spent strolling about the grounds taking in the scenery, both automotive, marine, and natural.

When the show came to a conclusion, awards were handed out in various classes and Steve Barao's superb yellow 2500M took the honors in the TVR class.

Thanks to Paul Eddy and his team for putting on a great show in a spectacular venue. For those of you in the northeast who haven't been to this show, be sure to put it on your calendar for 2008. You won't be sorry.
