How to install Fiero seats because they fit, last and are comfortable!
Fiero seats do fit in the 280i, but rub the center section and the door when they move. The outer part of the seat bottoms (called the "collar" and the "boxing" in upholstery terms) are bent up because they rub. This causes them to wear.
I have heard that Fiero seats fit in the M. The M is quite a lot narrower, but perhaps the center section of the interior, being much thinner than the 280i, makes up the difference. I haven't tried to install a fiero seat in my M. However, the width of the standard 1974 M seat cushion (bottom) is 19" and the width of the back is 20".
The Fiero seat cushion (bottom) is 19" wide and 21" long. The seat back is 20 " wide and 34" tall. Therefore, they should fit. The holes to bolt the frames down are about 13 - 14 inches apart. The holes are staggered and bolt to a very well made set of runners. They raise the seat by at least an inch. However, they are wide and I'm not sure they will fit in the width of the dropped area that the seat fits down into the M.
As far as I have seen, all Fiero seats are the same with just different upholstery. Most of them were a grey fabric. They wear well and are quite comfortable. They are well made with lots of foam and lots of complicated rods to hold the upholstery to the shape of the foam cushions. There are some different colors -- I have a set of brown and beige seats that one person told me at a British Car show, were a "shame" because they ruined the look of my 280i. He was probably right, but the old 280i seats were in awful shape. I took an upholstery course at the local community college to recover these seats. There were some leather covered seats also.
